Historical building substance from 1770 maintained
Former Kornhaus in Switzerland renovated
Date/place. More than 30 tonnes of renovation plaster were necessary to generally refurbish the Kornhaus built in Burgdorf near Berne in 1770. Until 2005, it housed a museum for folk culture, then the house in the old town was empty – its masonry and facade visibly dilapidated. Now that it has been restored, beer will be brewed in it according to an old tradition..
After the museum closed in 2005 for financial reasons, the structure of the now empty building became visibly dilapidated. The external facades also showed serious damage to the masonry, which were affected by moisture and salt. The centrally located, historical Kornhaus could only be saved when, because of an act of parliament by the town of Burghof in May 2011, the local brewery got the go-ahead for a comprehensive general rehabilitation.
Masonry and facade rehabilitation
In 2012, rehabilitation of the facades started. The experienced Mibatech AG rehabilitation company from Lützelflüh removed the shabby old plaster and applied the semiopaque spray plaster primer. Then, a layer of at least 20 mm of "epasit MineralSanoPro lpf" renovation plaster was applied. This is based on white cement and was the first renovation plaster to be certified by the WTA (Wissenschaftlich-Technische Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Bauwerkserhaltung und Denkmalpflege) [Scientific and Technological study group for the restoration of buildings and preservation of monuments; translator's note]. In total, more than 30 tonnes of renovation plaster were used. Now, after a final finishing coat of epasit water vapour permeable silicone resin colour, the building looks great again. The rehabilitation was supported by the epasit specialist Martin Hirsch.
Eventful history with a happy ending
According to records, the "Kornmagazin" or corn depot was built in the town of Burghof in the Canton of Berne in 1770. From 1991 until 2005 the venerable walls housed a museum for Swiss folk culture, including one of the biggest collections of gramophones and phonographs. Since March 2013, cultural events and festivities have once again taken place in the former Kornhaus. And the brewery maintains its tradition in the town centre.
